KeeFox version 2.0 is nearly here and with it comes a change of name which reflects the broader support for multiple web browsers such as Google Chrome.
Kee 2.0 is currently undergoing final tests before being released to the beta testing channel. If your current version of KeeFox ends in "b something" (e.g. 1.7.2b1) you're on the beta channel and will be one of the first to try out Kee - thanks!

By the end of this year KeeFox will have to change significantly so this post is an overview of what will change, how, when and why. Many of the details are still uncertain and will depend partially on how much spare time can be found to implement the changes and how many people can contribute to help this process. I'll post updates throughout the year as changes are made so you know what to expect when the bulk of the changes arrive at the end of the year in the form of KeeFox version 2.

All KeeFox users should update to version 1.6.4 (or 1.6.4b1 if you are a beta tester). For most users, Firefox will do this for you automatically. Both the Firefox addon and KeePass plugin will need to be updated. The button on the KeeFox setup page should update the KeePass plugin for you if you're on Windows but otherwise just manually copy the KeePassRPC.plgx file to the KeePass plugins folder as with most KeeFox updates.

A small omission has been found in the KeeFox documentation which explains the different ways that you can protect the connection between Firefox and KeePass. It's not a serious problem but since this may have guided some people's choice of KeeFox configuration, I wanted to post a quick explanation of the situation. Firstly, thanks to lhernanz for bringing this to our attention. If your computer runs Microsoft Windows you can stop reading now - this only affects users that use KeePass on Linux, Mac and other Unix operating systems.

In about a month we'll ask Mozilla to publish KeeFox 1.6 to all users.
It's a small release compared to KeeFox 1.5 but it will contain a few improvements and new options that some users will find very useful.
It will also be a release which breaks compatibility with some very old and insecure technologies so that we can continue to support new technologies and reduce the risk of KeeFox bugs.

I'm planning to continue working on KeeFox for the foreseeable future but a lot has changed since I started working on it in 2008 and particularly in the past few months so I am going to outline where I currently see KeeFox development heading in the next few years. There are three big concerns for the long-term viability and usefulness of KeeFox:
Passwords no longer being a common authentication method on the internet.

KeeFox 1.5 is undergoing final testing and will be released soon. There are dozens of new and improved features and hundreds of smaller improvements and bug fixes. You might need to re-save some of your existing logins to take advantage of all of the improvements and ensure the login behaves as expected. Thankfully the new "update existing password" feature should make this a painless process. The rest of this post will highlight the main improvements you'll see when you upgrade.

Version 1.5 of KeeFox is not far away. Along with a lot of new features and improvements which will be announced soon, there is a very large hidden change which is necessary because of a large change to an upcoming Firefox version.I expect Mozilla will mention this when the new Firefox is released but it is a technical change which is designed to mostly go unnoticed. You don't need to know this to use Firefox or KeeFox but I thought some people might be interested to know a little bit about the change.

To help protect Firefox users from malicious add-ons, Mozilla will soon require that all add-ons are "signed" (this mathematically proves that Mozilla has verified that the add-on is safe).
As part of this process, you will see a new KeeFox update released soon (due on 28th May). I'm not sure whether this will be given a new version number or if it will just be a refreshed version of 1.4.7.

All KeeFox users have just received a notification that their version of KeeFox is very old and requires upgrading. There are no known security faults with previous versions but as I'm sure you can understand, the reason this version warning exists is to remind you that running old unsupported versions does carry an inherently higher risk than staying up to date with the latest version. The latest version of KeeFox as of 9th January 2015 at 10:00 GMT was 1.

The KeeFox website has had a little overhaul to give it a more streamlined appearance and bring the systems that power it up to date. Hopefully you like the change, or are at least indifferent but the main point is that you should not be concerned if you notice that it has changed.
Upgrading a website can sometimes cause news readers and the automatic email update system to get a little confused so please accept my apologies if this leads to some unnecessary notifications of old news.

There are some new features too, such as the ability to search for KeePass logins without leaving Firefox. Most of these features are only possible in the brand new Firefox 29 but users of older versions of Firefox will still benefit from a few minor changes and bug fixes.

Fun fact: English reading KeeFox users are outnumbered by people that prefer to read other languages. Unfortunately English is the only language in which I can write so to help the majority of KeeFox users to understand KeeFox I rely on the great work of translators that donate their time to help translate KeeFox into various languages. Some languages are already complete and able to be included with the next version of KeeFox but most are not ready, including lots that are available for the current version of KeeFox but will be removed soon if they are not updated.

No private data will be collected at any time - things like the URLs you visit and the contents of your password database entries will never be collected.

It’s a lot of work for both developers and translators to ensure that an add-on is correctly translated into multiple languages but it’s a vital task for any add-on or software that will be used outside of the developer’s home country. We want KeeFox to be available in many more languages but the existing Firefox localisation system does not do as much as it could to help us reach this goal.

I’ve just been made aware of a potential privacy concern which has been fixed in the latest version of KeeFox. Until you receive the updated version, please note that some of your passwords may be temporarily displayed in a console that is used for debugging. This “error console” is usually hidden from view and its contents are not retained but in certain circumstances this could be a problem so I’ve tried to fix it as quickly as possible.

Multiple database support.
While I want KeeFox to support as many Firefox versions as possible, there does come a point where the security risks and development limitations mean it is not practical to continue supporting older versions of Firefox. Therefore from KeeFox version 1.1 onwards, only Firefox 4.0 and higher will be supported. If you’re in the minority that still use Firefox 3.x please plan an upgrade within the next month in order to ensure you can keep up to date with the latest KeeFox version.

Over 150 KeeFox users have already written a review of KeeFox and I’m sure some of you are in that group. I’m very grateful for the encouragement and kind comments that often accompany the the reviews. Mozilla (the organisation that makes Firefox) are running a competition to encourage you to write a review of your favourite add-on (up to three per person). The prize is an Android tablet so if you haven’t yet written a 5-star review of KeeFox, now could be a great time to do it!

KeeFox adds free, secure and easy to use password management features to Firefox which save you time and keep your private data safe and under your control. KeeFox connects Firefox to KeePass Password Safe, the most popular open source (and free) password manager. Four years, thousands of beta testers and seven international translations later I am delighted to say that KeeFox can be considered a stable add-on that is suitable for everyone to use.

Changes this time: HTTP Auth login boxes now correctly state when no matching passwords were found New domain matching rules prevent IP addresses from matching incorrectly Improvements to message/tip display (easier to prevent the same message appearing again once you’ve seen it) Miscellaneous changes to meet recent Firefox add-on best practice guidelines Dutch translation added Also note that (thanks to krbvroc1) you can now run KeeFox on Linux and Mac systems but we’ve not had enough beta testing feedback to enable support outside of the development channel.

The fundamental principles highlighted in the tutorial have not been significantly changed but the process should now be more streamlined. Additionally, new users are now encouraged to complete at least the first three steps of the tutorial (instead of four). A fresh new look should help everyone to concentrate on the important messages and familiarise themselves with KeeFox more quickly. What do you think?

Thanks to everyone that notified me of the problems with the recently released version of KeePass. I hope to release a new version in 4-6 weeks with a beta available within a few weeks. In the mean time, the existing version of KeeFox will continue to work with KeePass 2.17. As with the previous problematic KeePass upgrade, your upgrade route will be much simplified if you continue using KeePass 2.17 until after you are running a new version of KeeFox*.

A new version of KeeFox has just been approved on the official Firefox add-ons site. This version supports KeePass 2.17 (and earlier). There are a few other improvements too - full details are in the release notes for version 0.9.3a on this page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/keefox/versions/ I recommend installing the updated version of KeeFox while still running version 2.16 (or earlier) of KeePass. If you have already upgraded to KeePass 2.17 you will need to “paste and go” this URL in your location bar and click “Upgrade KeeFox”:

KeeFox is now ready for an international audience with translations into non-English languages. Incomplete Swedish and Russian translations are available in version 0.9 but complete versions have already been submitted ready for the version 0.9.1 release, along with Chinese (Simplified). It will be great if we can increase the number of translations over the next few weeks so that version 0.9.1 can be understood by as many people as possible. If you (or anyone you know) are willing to contribute to the translation of KeeFox into other languages please register on Babelzilla and follow the simple instructions they provide.

You must upgrade before the end of June 2011 or KeeFox will stop working.
I’m pleased to announce that KeeFox has recently been accepted into the official Firefox add-ons directory and can now be found at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/keefox/ After the 30th of June 2011 versions of KeeFox previously downloaded from this website will cease to function so you will need to install the version from the Firefox add-ons directory sometime in the next month. This expiry time is simply to ensure that no-one gets stuck using potentially insecure old versions of KeeFox; all future updates will be delivered automatically in the same way as most Firefox add-ons you have installed (so a fixed expiry time is no longer required).

The interactive tutorial at http://tutorial.keefox.org has been upgraded. Please complete it if you’re unsure about any KeeFox features, particularly before asking for help in the forum. These are the main improvements since the initial tutorial was launched: Added some troubleshooting tips on the first page Created a demonstration of customising KeeFox auto-fill and auto-submit behaviour per entry Added an example of recording a non-text field (specifically, a radio button) Uploaded some new and updated screenshots The last two steps have been marked as “advanced” - they are still useful for some people but probably not as important as the first 4 steps.

Users of 0.8.10 should not be affected by this bug.
Version 0.8.8 is now re-released on the experimental download page. It requires and includes KeePassRPC version 0.8.9 so hopefully a standard upgrade through Firefox will do the trick but if you do have problems, please delete the KeePassRPC plugin from the KeePass plugins folder. There also may be an issue with the release candidate of Firefox 4 which means that you should wait until Firefox has started before opening KeePass to trigger the start of the upgrade procedure - I’ll investigate that more in a few days and release a fixed version if necessary.

Here’s another experimental version for your enjoyment. This one has several new features and some important bug fixes and improvements to existing features. Please upgrade if you’re running an experimental version at the moment; I hope to release this as a final beta version before Firefox 4 is officially released (a couple of weeks?) so all feedback can help me judge whether that is a good idea or not! Highlights of this release are: Fixed: Auto-submit on HTTP Auth dialogs no longer closes the parent window (often closing Firefox as a result) Fixed: “monitor[ing] each web page for new forms” no longer causes a “flashing” effect on the toolbar Changing options no longer requires a restart of Firefox KeePass entry dialog editor KeeFox tab is now split into three sub-tabs to make it less cramped Improvements to the handling of locations: a new location manager and the ability to set different home groups for different locations via the “edit group” KeePass feature Improved detection of the “best” password when multiple entries exist for the same domain More complete list of matched logins on pages with matches in more than one frame Improvements to the installer including: no longer overwriting KeePass with the bundled version when manually setting the KeePass location HTTP Auth improvements (now uses the “realm” to improve auto-fill/submit accuracy and adds a tooltip showing the entry title)

Another technical post here which explains why KeePassRPC is secure and how an application developer needs to handle authentication with the plugin to protect its users. Security conscious people might view a KeePass remote access system with fear and loathing and it is true that installing this plugin exposes a new attack vector. I’ll explain how KeePassRPC can be exploited to access a user’s password database but you will see that the installation of the plugin is safe provided that… A) Neither me nor any 3rd party developers of libraries used in this project have made a mistake in the plugin code B) Both client and server machines remain secured from 3rd party threats such as viruses, trojans, keyloggers, etc.

At time of writing, the latest official version is still 0.7 (beta) but 0.71 is available for download if you’re brave enough. The test version will be updated occasionally, usually when new features are ready for testing or bugs have been fixed but not every change to the development version of KeeFox will be packaged in this way and not every change to this XPI will be assigned a new version number.

Firefox 3.0 will not be officially supported by Mozilla for much longer and some planned KeeFox features will be easier to implement if I concentrate on version 3.5+ only. For these reasons, KeeFox version 0.8 will require Firefox 3.5+. I don’t plan to drop support for 3.5 until after the release of KeeFox version 1.0 unless Mozilla officially withdraws support in the mean-time. However, to ensure you’re getting the fastest and most secure browsing experience, it is always advisable to upgrade to the latest Firefox version as soon as possible.

Who doesn’t prefer the simple option? Software developers are no different and security software is generally better the simpler it is so a sensible rule-of-thumb is to always KISS whenever possible, that’s Keep It Simple, Stupid! Therefore, I am pleased that in the past few weeks I’ve been able to simplify the most crucial aspect of the way KeeFox communicates with KeePass. The key change is that KeeFox now requires a new KeePass plugin called KeePassRPC instead of the (now retired) KeeICE plugin.

Version 0.7.3 is ready for testing by anyone feeling brave enough. Grab it from the “very latest” link towards the bottom of the download page. This version includes the bug fixes from version 0.7.1 and adds these new features: Allow opt-in/opt-out on an entry-by-entry basis for auto-fill and auto-submit New option to turn password save prompts off entirely New KeeFox Options Menu added to KeePass, including an option to not save the KeePass database automatically Right-clicking on a group in KeePass now offers the ability to restrict KeeFox to only entries within that group and its sub-groups (setting the option on the root group will reset it to default behaviour) Entries can be given priority weightings (use this feature to better manage sites where more than one matching entry is found) Entries without URLs are no longer displayed on the Logins toolbar menu Understanding how to use some of these new features will require reading about advanced strings.

0.7 Beta Released

KeeFox 0.7 has been released; this is the first Beta release of KeeFox. “Beta” means that this release is ready for wider testing by advanced KeePass users or other people with reasonable technical skills. While the majority of major features are complete, there are a number of important usability features that are incomplete and this may lead to confusion for less experienced users. I hope that KeeFox is simple enough that you will get by without documentation but I do intend to provide some before the 1.
