KeeFox version 2.0 is nearly here and with it comes a change of name which reflects the broader support for multiple web browsers such as Google Chrome.
Kee 2.0 is currently undergoing final tests before being released to the beta testing channel. If your current version of KeeFox ends in "b something" (e.g. 1.7.2b1) you're on the beta channel and will be one of the first to try out Kee - thanks!

By the end of this year KeeFox will have to change significantly so this post is an overview of what will change, how, when and why. Many of the details are still uncertain and will depend partially on how much spare time can be found to implement the changes and how many people can contribute to help this process. I'll post updates throughout the year as changes are made so you know what to expect when the bulk of the changes arrive at the end of the year in the form of KeeFox version 2.

All KeeFox users should update to version 1.6.4 (or 1.6.4b1 if you are a beta tester). For most users, Firefox will do this for you automatically. Both the Firefox addon and KeePass plugin will need to be updated. The button on the KeeFox setup page should update the KeePass plugin for you if you're on Windows but otherwise just manually copy the KeePassRPC.plgx file to the KeePass plugins folder as with most KeeFox updates.

In about a month we'll ask Mozilla to publish KeeFox 1.6 to all users.
It's a small release compared to KeeFox 1.5 but it will contain a few improvements and new options that some users will find very useful.
It will also be a release which breaks compatibility with some very old and insecure technologies so that we can continue to support new technologies and reduce the risk of KeeFox bugs.

I'm planning to continue working on KeeFox for the foreseeable future but a lot has changed since I started working on it in 2008 and particularly in the past few months so I am going to outline where I currently see KeeFox development heading in the next few years. There are three big concerns for the long-term viability and usefulness of KeeFox:
Passwords no longer being a common authentication method on the internet.

KeeFox 1.5 is undergoing final testing and will be released soon. There are dozens of new and improved features and hundreds of smaller improvements and bug fixes. You might need to re-save some of your existing logins to take advantage of all of the improvements and ensure the login behaves as expected. Thankfully the new "update existing password" feature should make this a painless process. The rest of this post will highlight the main improvements you'll see when you upgrade.

Version 1.5 of KeeFox is not far away. Along with a lot of new features and improvements which will be announced soon, there is a very large hidden change which is necessary because of a large change to an upcoming Firefox version.I expect Mozilla will mention this when the new Firefox is released but it is a technical change which is designed to mostly go unnoticed. You don't need to know this to use Firefox or KeeFox but I thought some people might be interested to know a little bit about the change.

I’m pleased to announce that KeeFox 1.4 has been released, including a new look that allows you to access all KeeFox features from a single toolbar button. There are some new features too, such as the ability to search for KeePass logins without leaving Firefox. Most of these features are only possible in the brand new Firefox 29 but users of older versions of Firefox will still benefit from a few minor changes and bug fixes.

With KeeFox 1.3 now released* and Firefox’s long-delayed redesign only a couple of months away, I’m currently working on a new way for you to interact with KeeFox. There are a lot of details still to be finalised but the headline is that the toolbar will be replaced with a single button and all KeeFox features will be found in that one place. I’m posting this article to explain how you can contribute your ideas and suggestions to help shape the final look and feel of KeeFox 1.

Fun fact: English reading KeeFox users are outnumbered by people that prefer to read other languages. Unfortunately English is the only language in which I can write so to help the majority of KeeFox users to understand KeeFox I rely on the great work of translators that donate their time to help translate KeeFox into various languages. Some languages are already complete and able to be included with the next version of KeeFox but most are not ready, including lots that are available for the current version of KeeFox but will be removed soon if they are not updated.

It’s a lot of work for both developers and translators to ensure that an add-on is correctly translated into multiple languages but it’s a vital task for any add-on or software that will be used outside of the developer’s home country. We want KeeFox to be available in many more languages but the existing Firefox localisation system does not do as much as it could to help us reach this goal.

The recently released KeeFox 1.1.2 contains dozens of new and improved features and a few important bug fixes, the highlights are below.
Multiple database support. Seamlessly work with more than one KeePass database thanks to these improvements: Logins from all open (unlocked) databases are matched (and automatically filled / submitted depending on your configuration)Logins from all open databases are listed on the Logins toolbar buttonA new login can be saved into any open databaseChanging databases from within KeeFox is now reliable and predictable Improved form matching accuracy: when KeeFox knows how many form fields to expect for an entry it will now use that information to help select the correct form on a pageInstant edit feature added: Review and edit every entry that KeeFox saves (disabled by default).

Version 0.9.5 has just been submitted to Mozilla for review so will hopefully be winging its way to you through the usual update channel within a week. Changes this time: HTTP Auth login boxes now correctly state when no matching passwords were found New domain matching rules prevent IP addresses from matching incorrectly Improvements to message/tip display (easier to prevent the same message appearing again once you’ve seen it) Miscellaneous changes to meet recent Firefox add-on best practice guidelines Dutch translation added Also note that (thanks to krbvroc1) you can now run KeeFox on Linux and Mac systems but we’ve not had enough beta testing feedback to enable support outside of the development channel.

Thanks to everyone that notified me of the problems with the recently released version of KeePass. I hope to release a new version in 4-6 weeks with a beta available within a few weeks. In the mean time, the existing version of KeeFox will continue to work with KeePass 2.17. As with the previous problematic KeePass upgrade, your upgrade route will be much simplified if you continue using KeePass 2.17 until after you are running a new version of KeeFox*.

There are a couple of important bug fixes including one where some other parts of Firefox stopped working when KeeFox was installed so I recommend all users of 0.8.12-14 should upgrade. Users of 0.8.10 should not be affected by this bug. The other improvements since 0.8.12 are: Improved password field matching HTTP Auth dialogs now respect global and site-specific “offer to save passwords” settings

KeeFox is now “feature complete” as far as version 1.0 is concerned - there are still many features I want to add later in the year but for the next few months I will be concentrating on fixing bugs and ensuring that the documentation and help resources are up to scratch before the release of version 1.

Version 0.8.8 is now re-released on the experimental download page. It requires and includes KeePassRPC version 0.8.9 so hopefully a standard upgrade through Firefox will do the trick but if you do have problems, please delete the KeePassRPC plugin from the KeePass plugins folder. There also may be an issue with the release candidate of Firefox 4 which means that you should wait until Firefox has started before opening KeePass to trigger the start of the upgrade procedure - I’ll investigate that more in a few days and release a fixed version if necessary.

Here’s another experimental version for your enjoyment. This one has several new features and some important bug fixes and improvements to existing features. Please upgrade if you’re running an experimental version at the moment; I hope to release this as a final beta version before Firefox 4 is officially released (a couple of weeks?) so all feedback can help me judge whether that is a good idea or not! Highlights of this release are: Fixed: Auto-submit on HTTP Auth dialogs no longer closes the parent window (often closing Firefox as a result) Fixed: “monitor[ing] each web page for new forms” no longer causes a “flashing” effect on the toolbar Changing options no longer requires a restart of Firefox KeePass entry dialog editor KeeFox tab is now split into three sub-tabs to make it less cramped Improvements to the handling of locations: a new location manager and the ability to set different home groups for different locations via the “edit group” KeePass feature Improved detection of the “best” password when multiple entries exist for the same domain More complete list of matched logins on pages with matches in more than one frame Improvements to the installer including: no longer overwriting KeePass with the bundled version when manually setting the KeePass location HTTP Auth improvements (now uses the “realm” to improve auto-fill/submit accuracy and adds a tooltip showing the entry title)

Another technical post here which explains why KeePassRPC is secure and how an application developer needs to handle authentication with the plugin to protect its users. Security conscious people might view a KeePass remote access system with fear and loathing and it is true that installing this plugin exposes a new attack vector. I’ll explain how KeePassRPC can be exploited to access a user’s password database but you will see that the installation of the plugin is safe provided that… A) Neither me nor any 3rd party developers of libraries used in this project have made a mistake in the plugin code B) Both client and server machines remain secured from 3rd party threats such as viruses, trojans, keyloggers, etc.
